A welcome surprise from the recent Mobile World congress in Barcelona was the announcement of a totally new smartphone from Sony Ericsson. More to the point, it will be the first mobile phone to utilise the new Window Mobile 6.1 Professional Operating System, which already gives it a head start over its rivals that use version 6, although Windows Mobile 6.1 hasn’t even been officially announced yet, so what differences the new version offers over the old remains to be seen.

The X1 has a 3″ touchscreen with very few controls on the front-end and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and reminds me a bit of the E-ten M700 & X500 as both share the same square design with few front controls and a large keyboard. Judging by the separation between each button typing will should be easy for this phone, although the keypad itself does look a bit dull thanks to the cold metallic greyscale used. Enhancing this even further is the Arc-Slider design which offers a slight elevation on the screen when slid out, a little similar to the HTC TYTN II but on a much lower scale.

The amount of functionality that Sony Ericsson have managed to pack into a mobile phone less than 17mm thick is quite some achievement. Options for connectivity are plentiful, which is no less than the general expectations for a business device such as this. As well as standard GPRS and Bluetooth, you also have advanced 3G at 3.6Mbps (or HSDPA if you like) and Wi-Fi as well. A 3.5mm audio jack is also available too to make for a great set of options, which offers a tantalising glimpse of what else is on offer.

One aspect that disappointed me in some smartphones lately is under the surface as although the feature set has been expanding constantly, insufficient processors or RAM chips have caused a major hindrance to speed & usability. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will have a 528Mhz Qualcomm processor and 128MB of RAM, which perhaps 8 or so years ago would have been specs similar to a standard home PC. Having this much power will hopefully ensure that the X1 will be lightning quick, though to be fair Sony Ericssons previous flagship smartphone the P1i didn’t suffer with this problem at all so any concerns to this end are likely to be unfounded, but lets wait and see before conclusions are reached in haste.

Screen Auto-UI rotation is supported which in essence means that when the phone is tilted for viewing in landscape mode, the screen follows suit. This should hopefully save power being diverted from the processor when opening up the keyboard and presumably save time.

Aside from the office & business features the X1 continues to offer even more for the expected high-price tag. Music is catered for ably thanks to the compatibility with Bluetooth headphones and the wealth of on-board memory available. A massive 400MB of internal memory will be available as well as the usual microSD slot, though whether the XPERIA X1 will incorporate SDHC cards is to be confirmed. An FM radio with RDS is also available in the unlikely event you run out of music or simply get bored of your own collection.

To top everything off nicely, the XPERIA X1 has a built-in GPS receiver enabling use as a sat-nav device with compatible software and there is also a 3.15MP camera with autofocus & flash. There is no word at this time whether the X1 will come bundled with any navigation software, but hopefully that will be revealed shortly.

Although I will reserve judgement until I can properly put the OS through its paces, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 does already look very tantalising and the sheer wealth of features they’ve managed to squeeze in just leaves one question - how long ’til I can buy one!?

The number in the format (for example “720″) is the vertical lines of display resolution and the letter in the format (for example “p”) stands for the display technique. The letter “p” means “progressive” scan, and the letter “i” means “interlaced”.

HDTV (both 720p, 1080i, and 1080p) has a wide screen aspect ratio of 16:9 (width: height). EDTV (enhanced definition) is a standard definition TV (SDTV the format before HDTV), but with some software “interpolation”. EDTV delivers a picture that is superior to that of SDTV, but not as sharp as HDTV. EDTV uses progressive scanning. EDTV sometimes has an aspect ratio of 16:9 (wide screen).

For reference, standard definition TV (SDTV, the format before HDTV) has 480 lines of vertical resolution and has an aspect ratio of 4:3. The SDTV signal is the U.S. has historically been an interlaced signal. This means that your TV set draws each frame in two passes: once for the even horizontal lines and a second pass for the odd lines. The specification is a maximum resolution for the technology, but often, the signal sources are less than the maximum. Currently, the only source material for 1080p is movies, especially movies originally made for IMAX. None of the major networks (ABC, ESPN, etc.) has yet announced support for 1080p. In addition, Sony Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 have 1080p games.

HDTV Video Format: 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, the higher number is better, right? Even though 1080i technically has a higher resolution, it is not the obvious choice. 1080i has 1080 vertical lines of resolution and 1920 horizontal lines of resolution. 720p has 720 lines of vertical resolution and has 1280 lines of horizontal resolution. But the 720p system is progressively scanned. This compensates for the lower level of resolution. The 1080p signal is the best of both worlds, more picture information with a progressive format.

If your signal received, for example for a satellite receiver, is primarily standard definition, a 1080p TV will not significantly improve your picture when compared to a 720p TV. The picture quality is fundamentally limited by the source signal (480 lines of vertical resolution). Similarly, if your signal has a 720 source, then the 1080 TV will not improve your picture. All High Def sports broadcasts from Fox, ESPN, and ABC are broadcast in 720p.

Some networks have opted for the 1080i format because it provides the more picture information, while ABC, Fox, ESPN, and the National Geographic Channel have chosen the smoother pictures of 720p. HDTV programming on CBS, NBC, and other networks is broadcast in 1080i. The new 1080i or 1080p HDTVs will probably make this type of programming somewhat sharper than it would appear on a 720p TV. This becomes more important because as the TV screen gets larger, the visible difference in detail between 720p and 1080i and 1080p displays becomes more apparent. Because of this, most HDTV sets larger than 50 inches are 1080p or 1080i.

1080p HDTV System Capabilities:

A 1080p HDTV displays all inputs signals at 1080p, because this is the normal resolution of the unit. If the system is less than 1080i or 1080p, then a special purpose chip in your HDTV scales the signal. It will interpolate, like the EDTV does with a SDTV signal. If the signal is 1080i, the system will combine the odd and even interlaced frames and display the full signal as 1080p. The resulting performance should be similar to a true 1080p video source.

Cable HDTV:

More than 100 million U.S. homes can receive HDTV from their cable system, and all of the top 100 cable markets in the country have available HDTV programming. Unfortunately, most cable providers carry only a few of the 50+ available HDTV networks.

Satellite HDTV:

While HDTV local channel selection is generally better on cable than satellite, the major satellite companies offer more national HDTV channels than almost every cable provider. Both DirecTV and the Dish Network have promised to offer more than 130 HDTV channels by the end of the year. “Satellite’s going to be constrained not so much by how many channels they can carry than by how many they can get,” Bob Scherman, Satellite Business News.

By 2010, 60% of U.S. homes will use a Satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

Totally unaffordable then… But the picture on those sets seemed absolutely magical.

Prices for plasma TV’s are currently in free fall, but naturally, some budget models are built for performance and value.

By this, I mean you will note that some plasma screens have a shiny surface.
Some sets have an anti reflective filter that cuts that problem down, as well.
If the front of the screen is shiny, meaning it has no AR coating, this can produce annoying reflections, especially in brightly lit rooms.
Also, some sets are monitors only; they don’t include speakers or a tuner for any type of analog (old style) or digital (new style) TV signal.
Most new High definition sets should have a built in digital and analog tuner and may have high quality, if small, speakers.
Check this by listening to the set in question… Turn up the volume!
There is no clunky converter box with these sets, which is perfect for a wall-mounted plasma TV.
Like conventional televisions, you can also choose to mount plasma TV’s on a desktop stand.
Make sure you protect you children and pets with an anti tip cable to the wall behind, because flat panels can overbalance easily, especially if a dog or child goes behind or in front of the set and pushes it far enough…

2: Or on your wall.

However, a plasma TV is a heavy unit to trust to bolts in drywall or sheetrock.
Weighing in at 50 pounds or more, plasma TV’s need adequate support and lots of ventilation because of the heat they generate.
Naturally, you may want to check with a building pro if you are mounting one on your wall.
Even placing the set on a table or A/V stand can be problematic.
I have seen one go through the toughened glass of a unit that was rated much higher than the weight of the plasma that was placed on it.
This did not happen until some months later. Go figure.

3: Picture quality varies considerably between different makes and models of plasma TV’s, so be sure to read reviews before you go and lay down your hard earned.

Naturally, HD pictures look better the smaller or finer grained the pixels are, and the larger the screen, the more this applies.
As an example, if you were to look at some cheaper Plasma sets, the screen looks quite coarse because the pixels are large.
Kind of like a Newspaper picture, pictures are dotty or pixelly up close.
